Welcome to the Harris Community Center

The Harris Center is a place of enduring memories. It’s been that way for generations. A former schoolhouse, the building was restored in 2006. On most days its smaller rooms host local government or civic meetings, but on weekends and at other special occasions the right touch seamlessly transforms the Evans Room, capacity of 220 people, into a unique and unanticipated destination for intimate weddings and receptions.

The Harris Center is in a quaint location a short walk from picturesque Nolan Creek. There is ample parking, and a kitchen available for rent at a reasonable price. If you’re looking for a clean and affordable location for a wedding, reception, or other event, call or visit the friendly staff at the Harris Center. They will help make sure that the memories are both enduring and affordable!

Facility History

The earliest record of public education for area African American students dates from 1882 when Mrs. Aleck McGee was hired "to teach the colored school." Professor Thomas Breckenridge Harris (1862-1907), a graduate of Fisk University, became the first instructor of the African American High School in 1890.

The name "West Belton School" was chosen in 1900. In 1936, a new building was erected at the site to house African American students of all grade levels. By petition the school was named "T. B. Harris" for its revered former principal. The last class graduated in 1966, and Belton schools were integrated the following year.
